Everyone wants to get a glimpse of the Atlantis on Paradise Island when they dock in Nassau, Bahamas. While it is possible to see it from the ship, there are ways to get closer to it without having to pay an arm and a leg to do the water park. Sightseeing can be just as fun.

For years I’ve been taking the water taxi from the cruise pier to Paradise Island (a barrier island off Nassau).

Getting to Paradise Island from Nassau:

  • When you walk off the cruise ship go through the terminal with all the shops and walk right. You will see some moped rentals and fence, just around the corner is the boardwalk.
  • Once on the boardwalk you’ll see a sign that says Ferry Boats to Paradise Island and Atlantis. The ferry operations seven days a week from 9a-6p and costs $4 each way of $8 roundtrip. You’re best bet will be to by the roundtrip ticket before you board. This is a cash only system.
  • Once you board the ferry you’ll start your 20-minute journey from the cruise pier to Paradise Island. There’ll be a narrator on the boat on the way over and he’ll give you some great insight on the island, the famous that occupy the million dollar houses and some basic info on the island.
  • Once you dock you’ll give be let off at a landing area where you can follow the crowds to Atlantis by snaking around the loading area and taking a right at the stop light. You can’t miss the Atlantis; it’s huge and towers over you.

To return, just head back to the same loading area and wait in line to board the ferry. The ferry schedule is the same returning except the last ferry leaves Paradise Island at 5:30. You can also taxi it back to the pier for approximately $10.

Tips:

  • You don’t need to make reservations to use the water taxi but it’s first come, first serve. Remember, there can be a lot of cruise ships in Nassau so the early bird gets the worm.
  • The tour guide will ask for a tip at the end of the voyage, usually walking around and collecting it from each passenger. You aren’t obligated to tip him but I always give him a couple bucks.
  • Even though the ferry ride is only 20-mintues each way, I would play it safe and take the ferry at least two hours before ship departure time. The ship won’t wait.
  • If you want to play it safe and see Atlantis, you can check out the Discover Nassau Town and Atlantis from Shore Excursions Group.
