While Nassau, Bahamas is known for its world class resorts, junkanoo culture and as a setting for many film projects (including Casino Royale), it’s also a great place to retreat and relax. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to find the right place for relaxation; you can visit some of the best beaches in Nassau by venturing out on your own.
Grab a taxi and head for one of these free public beaches in Nassau:
1. Cabbage Beach. While beautiful, this beach tends to be one of the most crowded beaches on the island as there are several big resort hotels located near or on this beach. Taxi drivers know exactly where you to take you for public access to this beach. With about two miles of white sand coastline, there’s plenty of space to spread out. You can also rent water sports gear from several different vendors. Personally, I really enjoyed spending time on this beach and didn’t find it to be terribly crowded.
2. Cable Beach. Don’t let the 5 hotels located on this beach steer you away from this spot. It can actually be a great place to unwind and relax. And since there are so many resorts there, you have the option to pay a small fee and use the hotel amenities including the pools. If you want to keep it free, stick with the beach itself. There’s a reason the resorts are there: it’s a breathtaking beach paradise. A bonus of this public beach: tons of great eating options between the resorts and local places.
3. Junkanoo Beach. This beach is close to downtown Nassau, making it an accessibly easy option for cruisers. It’s a bit smaller than some of the other beaches on the island, so it tends to stay less crowded. One of the best parts of this beach is the public toilets and changing facilities – an amenity not often found in public beaches in Nassau. Note – if you’re traveling during Spring Break, Junkanoo Beach can be one of the craziest places on the island.
4. Love Beach. Disclaimer – this beach is technically a locals-only spot, but since it tends to stay empty, you’re usually able to visit with no problems. Just be respectful when visiting the beach. Located on the North Shore past Gambier Village, you’ll find sensational snorkeling here. It’s a bit of a hike from downtown Nassau – about nine miles in fact.
5. Western Esplanade. If you want a taste of delicious island food in a tropical, beach setting, this is your beach. It’s located near Cable Beach, just across from Fort Charlotte. You’ll often find locals holding fundraising cookouts and you’re welcome to take part of the effort. Important to know – there are no public facilities here.
