Cruises can be the disaster of any diet plan. Having your choice of drinks and enjoying the buffet along with fine dining in the evenings can counter the weeks (or months) you spent dieting and exercising in preparation for your cruise activities. There are few things worse than returning from your cruise with unwanted pounds.
1. Hit The Gym
Thankfully, cruise ships have been designed with features to help their guests stay on their exercise program even while at sea. Fitness centers and spas keep getting bigger, and on new builds, they are bigger than most gyms you’ll find on land. Most of these actually have a variety of fitness classes that can help you stay in shape while aboard, or introduce you to activities you might want to continue when you’re back on land. Cruisers who don’t really like gyms can find activities on board that are fun but help with fitness at the same time. Even older ships have received refurbishments that have added fitness friendly features.
2. Be Active
If the gym isn’t your thing, that’s ok. Most ships now offer activities that have a physically demanding element to them which will definitely get your heart rate up! Royal Caribbean offers rock wall climbing, trampolines, ice skating and surfing simulations just to name a few activities that can get your blood pumping and calories burning!
Norwegian offers rope courses. Essentially, on a ropes course, cruisers are strapped into a harness and turned loose on a jungle gym for grown-ups to get past the obstacles without falling. It’s a lot of fun, and a great workout too. Carnival has started installing rope courses aboard their ships as part of their Fun Ship 2.0 program. If gyms aren’t your cup of tea, then an exhilarating climb a few stories above the wave tops may very well be.
Another option for the fitness conscious cruiser is the sports deck. Carnival, Norwegian, and Disney cruise ships have them. Meaning that a game of basketball or soccer aboard can be arranged, and it’s a great way to keep fit. Although, we are at a loss to tell you what happens if a ball goes out of bounds. Royal Caribbean, meanwhile, has taken advantage of the enormous size of their newest ships to put things like ice skating rinks on board. Definitely an excellent way to keep in shape.
3. Show Us Those Moves
Not really the sports type? More of a lounge by the pool with a drink in hand during the day and prowl the night scene with your troupe? Well, there are ways that you can stay active too! While enjoying the night life onboard, why not take the opportunity to show off your latest dance moves? All the alcohol by the pool and at the onboard bar should have loosened up those inhibitions enough to get you really shaking it out and raising up that heart rate!
