I am trying to book a cruise and I keep noticing that almost every cruise line has a single supplement fee, some of them are 200%! Are there any ways around paying that extra fee? Help!

First of all, let’s dispel that rumor because not every cruise has a single supplement.  There are several ships that have single occupancy cabins without any supplement.  This growing trend has become very popular and profitable for the cruise lines, and in all honesty, it’s been a market that has been neglected for far too long.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ships have studio staterooms that are designed for single guests and do not carry a supplement.  Royal Caribbean is doing the same with Quantum of the Seas, and they’re even going back to their older ships to add some single staterooms.

The other thing to know is that not all single supplements are 200%.  Depending on the cruise line, there are certain dates or itineraries with supplements as low as 25 – 50%, some even waive the supplement.  Also be sure to check out the river cruise lines as they frequently have single traveler promotions too.

The key to traveling as a single is to understand that 200% is not an across the board rule, and that a professional travel agent who specializes in cruises can help you identify some options that might work with your budget.
