Recently we received a listener question about travel insurance and the possibility of canceling their upcoming trip.
Question
I will soon be booking a cruise for July 2015. There are 7 people in my family so we are getting 2 cabins. My question is 3 of the kids are grown, 22, 24 and 25. I don’t know 100% for sure that they will be able to go. They may have employers and work schedules that they can’t get away for 8 days. Does the trip insurance protect the purchase price for any reason of cancellation? I am not having much luck in my google search of this topic.
Good question. I turned it over to our friends at InsureMyTrip to get the best answer possible.
Response
The scenario your listener is describing sounds as if it probably would not be covered by the majority of travel insurance plans, but it would be something that could fall under “Cancel for Any Reason” coverage. What the listener needs to know is that to purchase travel insurance with Cancel for Any Reason, she or he would need to buy the travel insurance within anywhere from 10-30 days of making the very first payment on the trip — in other words, as soon as he or she books the cruise, get working on buying that insurance.
